the dirigo group
in the fall of 1999, a group of artists from all over the united states found themselves in austin, texas searching for a project; so with a lot of “desire,” a handful of clip lights and a barn, they staged desire: a reconsideration of desire under the elms. after an overwhelming response and four b. iden payne awards (outstanding drama, outstanding director of a drama, outstanding lead actress in a drama, and outstanding supporting actor in a drama), the group of six decided to make it permanent and gave it a name: the dirigo group. over the next few years, the dirigo group would work with over 40 austin artists and tackle such projects as sam shepard’s fool for love and cowboy mouth, lanford wilson’s home free!, the original new york production of year of the voice, the original epic musical the gypsy chain, sam shepard's true west, neil labute’s bash and the mercy seat, hedda- a reconsideration of ibsen’s hedda gabler, lowell bartholomee's the middle of the night, kirk lynn’s the jinn- which was nominated for the american theatre critics/steinberg new play award and the m. elizabeth osborn award for an emerging playwright on the basis of their production, and daniel macivor's in on it. they have garnered 5 b. iden payne theater industry awards and 19 austin critics table award nominations, most recently for their production of carlos murillo’s a human interest story (best drama, best director of a drama, best supporting actor- dan dietz- and best supporting actress- heather hanna- in a drama). the company has also received critical acclaim, been cited in critics’ top ten lists, and named one of the "hot, hip, and on the verge" theater companies in the country by american theatre magazine and "best theater for a fresh look" by the austin chronicle critics poll.
